Solidity Transcript

I started solidity in a little garage in 2003 as we took Corian and HI-MACS into bathrooms in a big way. And we started to make seamless wet room floors.

We were the first people in Europe to develop a system to get a seamless wet-room floor into the domestic market, and custom size shower trays and custom sized baths and custom sized vanities. And we went nuts in bathrooms, met some inspiration architects and grew the business from there. That’s when we decided we had to automate more of our processes. It was about 2009 we took the plunge. Bought some SolidWorks, a CNC machine and we never looked back.

SolidWorks revolutionised everything we do because we used to be a manual company before and now we use it in conjunction to a 3d laser scanning device.  That enables us to make really accurate models of people’s houses. To bring the pieces of furniture into people’s houses accurately. Prior to that we had 2d drawings, just a plan view. Customers would often not understand the concepts even though they had requested things they didn’t fully understand the aesthetic of what they were going to be delivered. Now we can completely understand the 3D room, the environment they are going into. We can model them, we can show them renders, give them much more technical drawings that are detailed. It totally helps us and the customer visualise everything.

I use both PhotoView and Visualize, I only recently got the Visualize and it’s fantastic actually, it’s a brilliant rendering tool, that enables me to show clients exactly what they will be getting from an aesthetic point of view.

We are also using 3d pdf’s and eDrawings, it’s a really strong selling point. Which changes the business completely, you spend no time redoing old mistakes, you just engineer them out.

We are finding that Initially we were completely leading in the fact we were using SolidWorks. Now it’s becoming a more and more popular choice for people like joinery companies. Architects are beginning to use that as well as their other packages, the more architectural packages and now we can collaborate and swap models and drawings with other companies.

It’s all progress and the way you can retain your knowledge in the design library and the revision control, it all adds to a really really well controlled manufacturing process. It’s really flexible and really intuitive.

I came to using SolidWorks, not from a cad background at all, it had no experience, and I can honestly say I have thoroughly enjoyed using SolidWorks. I have no experience of any other cad package what so ever, but I find it fantastically user friendly.

We bought the CNC machine in conjunction with SolidWorks, specifically to be used together. That initially was SolidCAM, it sped up our production time enormously. All of the parts are coming off the CNC pre-cut and with the technical drawing they are able to piece them together really quickly.

The turnaround from the start of the commissioning process to the finished design, SolidWorks has definitely speeded things up for us. It has also made what would be otherwise impossible, possible. A really good example is a radial staircase that we just designed. We have a local specialist high end staircase manufacturer. They’d never seen anything quite like this before. We were able to use SolidWorks and the patterning tools and other really easy to use factuality to create this brand new object that these people had never seen. We were done in three days.

Cadtek are part of our team. When we were learning they were brilliant, it didn’t matter that we were on the phone all the time about little things. They’d dive on and do Go-To meetings and steer us onscreen. It’s ideal.

Cadtek have been enormously helpful since day one, for me. Not coming from a CAD background, I had a very steep learning curve. We had to get up and running with this new technology that my boss had purchased, very quickly. If it wasn’t for Cadtek I would not be where I am now doing what I’m doing. In the early days they helped design my models, build a library, use and understand the software, were always available on the phone and they’ve been absolutely essential to what I do.

Overview

Solidity is a Solid Surface manufacturing company based in High Wycombe. Specialists in Corian, HI-MACS and Krion fabrication and joinery, they have a team of highly trained staff based in an in-house workshop. www.solidity.co.uk

Solidity was started 13 years ago by a husband and wife team who had both worked previously in the Solid Surface industry, Katie Cook and Chris Cook. They were the first UK Solid Surface fabricator to specialise in bathrooms, inventing the first reliable wet room floor system. Solidity’s shower trays are still best in class and the only ones with a 15 year warranty for both material and manufacture. Not only working in the bathroom industry but also now known as the go to fabricator for the most difficult and complicated jobs across all sectors.
